Majestic Crete
Crete is one of the best places to visit when taking a cruise around the Greek Islands. Crete is divided into four regions, each with its own unique scenery, by a majestic chain of towering mountains. Most Mediterranean cruises stop at one or two of Crete’s main ports.
Port of Heraklion
One port is Heraklion. Heraklion is the capital of Crete and is the largest city in Greece. Heraklion can be described as a remarkable combination of long established and contemporary Cretan culture and elegant style. Visitors will find native taverns and petite cafes along the Heraklion port. In addition, visitors will find a variety of high quality native goods such as wine and honey in the local shops. Some places to visit while on tour are the home of King Minos and the Minotaur, the municipal gardens, and the Palace of Knossos. In addition, there are several others museums to explore.
Agios Nikolaos
Another main port that most Mediterranean cruises stop is at the beautiful city of Agios Nikolaos. Agios Nikolaos is located on the north eastern side of the Crete Island. In the center of the city is Lake Voulismeni, the well-known bottomless lake. Visitors can find delicious food in any one of the many petite cafes, or find a refreshing drink at one of the several local bars that are situated along the banks. While touring Agios Nikolaos, there are several activities visitors can participate in. For those who are looking to relax on the warm sand and enjoy the sun, there are numerous beaches in the region. One of the best beaches in the area is the Almiros. It is secluded and fairly peaceful. Kitroplatias is another beautiful and peaceful beach to visit. Many of the area’s coves are isolated and provide privacy from the hustle and bustle as well. One cove is the Kalo Chorio. Other sightseeing adventures include a tour to the Knossos Palace and a visit to the Nikolaos Church, which is a tiny and unique Byzantine chapel.
